Summer Care Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe in the UK Heatwave

June 24, 2026 By Claire

Summer Care Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe

When temperatures climb as they have over the past couple of weeks and summer is in full swing as it is here in the UK our pets feel the heat far more intensely than we do.

At Pet Central Hotel, where the philosophy is simple — your pet always comes first — the team’s decades of hands‑on experience offer valuable guidance for keeping dogs and cats safe, cool, and comfortable during hot weather.

Understand How Heat Affects Pets
Dogs and cats can’t regulate temperature as efficiently as humans. Dogs rely heavily on panting, while cats conserve energy and seek shade. Both are vulnerable to heatstroke, which can develop quickly and become life‑threatening. Recognising early signs — excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting — is essential.

Summer Care Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe 3

Prioritise Hydration
• Fresh, cool water should be available at all times.
• Place multiple bowls around the home and garden.
• Add ice cubes to keep water cooler for longer.
• For cats, consider a water fountain to encourage drinking
• Avoid Peak Heat Hours

Just as Pet Central Hotel carefully structures exercise to suit each dog’s needs, you should:

• Walk dogs early morning or late evening.
• Keep midday outings short and shaded.
• Never allow vigorous play in high temperatures.
• Hot pavements can burn paws — if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet.

Create a Cool Home Environment
• Close curtains during the day to block heat.
• Use fans or cooling mats.
• Provide shaded outdoor areas.
• For cats, ensure safe access to cool hiding spots.

Summer Care Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe 2

Never Leave Pets in Cars
Even with windows open, temperatures inside a car can soar dangerously within minutes. Pet Central Hotel emphasises safe, secure environments — and a parked car is never one of them.

Grooming Matters
The on‑site grooming team at Pet Central Hotel knows that proper coat care helps pets stay cool.

• Regular brushing removes excess fur.
• Avoid shaving double‑coated breeds — their fur actually insulates against heat.
• Keep coats clean to support natural temperature regulation.

Special Considerations for Cats
Cats often hide discomfort, so subtle signs matter.

• Encourage rest in cool rooms.
• Keep litter trays away from sunny areas.
• Indoor cats may benefit from frozen water bottles wrapped in towels placed nearby.

Extra Care for Dogs
Some dogs are more heat‑sensitive — brachycephalic breeds, seniors, puppies, and those with medical conditions.

• Offer cool treats like frozen banana slices or pet‑safe ice pops.
• Monitor breathing closely.
• Keep exercise gentle and controlled.

When in Doubt, Seek Help
If you suspect heatstroke, contact a vet immediately. Quick action saves lives.

At Pet Central Hotel, pets enjoy a calm, spacious countryside environment designed with their wellbeing in mind — a reminder that thoughtful care makes all the difference.

With a few simple precautions, you can help your cat or dog stay safe, happy, and comfortable throughout the UK’s hot weather.

Prepare your Pet for Boarding

Prepare your Pet for Boarding

At Pet Central Hotel, we completely understand how it feels to leave your pet in someone else’s care. They’re family, and it’s normal to feel a bit unsure. We want you to know that we take that trust to heart. To help make things easier, we’ve put together a simple guide that walks you through check‑in and drop‑off, so the whole process feels calm, clear, and stress‑free for both you and your pet.

Two weeks prior to boarding
Before you board it is essential to check your pet is up to date with all of their vaccinations, bearing in mind these are administered by your vet annually. It is important to note that your vaccination card does needs to be stamped by the vet as proof of what has been administered.

We ask for a two week clear period from your pets vaccination to them staying with us at Pet Central hotel. At this time we also request your pets micro chip number is added to their vaccination card as we will ask for it on drop off. Along with annual vaccinations flee and worm treatments are required and it is advised to record these ready for boarding.

At this stage we recommend if your pet is on any medication check to confirm you will have sufficient amount for their stay with us.

The Day before boarding
If you have cats to board with us we recommend keeping their carry boxes hidden away, because if they see them they tend to go missing when you are getting ready to go away.

At Pet Central hotel we can provide all bedding, food (from our own range) and toys, however, if you would like to bring some toys for their stay that will be fine. If your pet requires a special diet and you are providing it please provide a measuring cup if biscuits are to be fed to your pet during their stay.

Drop off Day
Pet Central Hotel is open from 8:30 until 10.00am and again from 3.00pm until 4.00pm. Whilst you can drop off either in the morning or the afternoon, we do recommend for a first stay a morning drop off is the best to allow your pet to settle and meet the team.

When you are dropping if there is space the opportunity to upgrade your pets stay into one of our suites maybe an option for you.

What happens during the check in process?
We have a series of questions that allows us to process your pet ready for their stay. We have made a list which is designed to make it easy and stress free for their stay.

  • We will check your contact numbers are correct and we will also require a third party contact in case we are unable to contact you. This is important if we are unable make contact with you, we need a third party contact for any authorisation.
  • Confirmation that your pet is up to date with flee and worming
  • Is your pet insured.
  • Would you like photos posted on social media to allow you to keep in touch whilst you are away.
We have found that this is an invaluable way of checking in on your pet.
  • If you would like your dog to be bathed whilst in boarding. We also, offer an on site grooming service.

The next section is directly related to your pet:
Up to date vaccination information will be added to our system
Your pet’s dietary requirements will be added including how often they are fed and the quantity.
Any medication will be entered onto our system and it is important to bring the medication along with the required dosage.

The final section is the payment and this can be settled by either cash or transfer.
Your pet will be taken to our facilities and cared for by our training and caring staff leaving you with peace of mind.

By taking a few simple steps ahead of time, you’ll help us get your pet settled in quickly and comfortably. Our team is here to make the process straightforward, answer any questions and ensure everything runs smoothly from drop‑off to pick‑up, alternatively if you have questions prior to this, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to welcoming your pet for their stay.

Autumn Breaks with Pet Central Hotel

Autumn Breaks with Pet Central Hotel

Summer seems almost just a distant memory and with autumn upon us it’s still full steam ahead for us here at the kennels and cattery.

Autumn Breaks with Pet Central Hotel

If you have children at school, you maybe forgiven for thinking they’ve just gone back after the school holidays, but the half term break will soon be coming around, and if you’re planning a break away for mid-autumn, don’t forget to book early with us.

Half term is traditionally a busy time for us, so it’s one less thing for you (and us) to worry about if you are planning a trip away.

If you don’t have kids, maybe your thoughts are turning towards planning for a weekend get away to beat the autumn blues or maybe even a Christmas weekend shopping experience somewhere romantic.

Our weekend service offers the perfect opportunity to drop your pets off on a Friday and pick up on a Monday after a relaxing weekend away – whether that’s here in the UK or overseas.

And don’t forget whilst you are away we can keep you updated with pictures of your pets if you’re connected to us through our Facebook or Twitter social media channels.

Our wide range of accommodation for cats and dogs include luxury suites for dogs if you’re looking for a home-from-home experience for your dog, whilst our modern cattery provides all mod cons including piped music and heated igloos, which maybe just what your cat wants on these cooler autumnal nights.

With autumn setting in, the festive evenings of Halloween and Bonfire night will soon be with us.  If you’re planning a party or are off out for the night, why not let us take the pressure off and book your pets in for an overnight stay.

You can drop them with us here at Pet Central Hotel during the day and pick them up the following morning, leaving plenty of time to get yourself glammed up, pet hair free and enjoy your evening, without the worry of having to get back to your left animals.

For more information on our short break weekends and overnight stays, why not email us or call the office on 01527 892 164.

Looking after your Cat through the Summer months

May 23, 2013 By Claire

Looking after your Cat through the Summer months

Hopefully with summer not too far away, we thought we’d offer a few pointers for looking after your cat through the summer months. After all, as a cattery owner we see lots of cats over the summer period and love being able to pass on the information we have to make sure you keep your cat looked after for the warmer months ahead

Cats love warm weather and for the most part they’re very good at keeping themselves cool. However, if the weather becomes very hot it’s always a good idea to try and keep them out of direct sunlight and heat between 10am and 3.00pm.

Keeping curtains and blinds closed in the house will often make your home a cooler environment for your cat and if your house stays cooler with windows closed then it’s a good idea to keep those closed too.

Cattery Bromsgrove RedditchWhen your cat does go outside apply a good quality pet sunscreen to nose and ears. Buy one which can’t be licked off. This is particularly useful if your cat is a light coloured variety.

If your cat grooms itself more through the warm summer months don’t be too alarmed about this. They will spend more time grooming as a cooling measure as the saliva acts a cooling agent by evaporating from the fur helping to cool them.

A sleepy cat through the warm summer months is usual. They will by nature take it easy to save themselves from getting too hot and bothered. A nice cool place to lie down and relax such as in front of a fan or a nice cool floor is another favourite trick!

Attention to your cats feet and paws is worth consideration. Their sweat glands will often leave wet paw prints as a give away of sweating meaning they need to replenish their fluids.  Always make sure a plentiful supply of water is around for your cat in different areas of the house. A good tip to remember is that cats often prefer their food and water to be in different areas.

Cats will often pant through warmer months, although this is not so obvious as for a dog for example. They will do this to take on cool air if they are hotter than normal. This is not to be concerned about unless the panting is particularly heavy.

As with humans, cats enjoy the warmer weather but common sense and a little attention to their needs will ensure your cat stays in good health throughout the summer months. If you are at all concerned regarding your cats health over the summer period, then you should consult your local vet for further help.
